Measuring LCC – The Measurement of Sustainability Impact in Contracts
ESR 6
This project will contribute to the development of best-practices in life cycle costing (LCC) or equivalent sustainability assessment methods, such as techno-economic assessment (TEA) to achieve SDGs. The ESR will:
- establish the state-of-the-art in LCC or equivalent method and the monetization methods that could be used to establish the life cycle cost to
- assess which monetization methods meet the legal requirements in EU SPP rules,
- apply LCC or equivalent on a specific case study on chosen factors affecting climate change, and
- verify the impact of methodological choices and legal rules on the end result in order to derive best-practices.
The ESR will specifically focus on the most advanced form of life cycle analysis, i.e. life cycle costing, which is expressly regulated in Article 68 of Directive 2014/24/EU.
ESR 6 will also investigate other equivalent sustainability assessment methods that fall in the wider category of life cycle assessment.
This project does not aim to develop new technology, but it will investigate the creation and use of existing technologies/methodologies, including through secondments with research institutions developing them.
ESR 6 is supervised by assistant professor Sebastien Lizin and co-supervised by professor Dacian Dragos.

Learn More About Haitham Abu-Ghaida
Haitham Ghaida has a background in Civil/Architectural engineering and quantitative sustainability assessments. Originally from Jordan, he has studied at Jordan University of Science and Technology for his Bachelor’s Degree and Aarhus University for his Master’s Degree. His past research has focused on Integration of Life Cycle Assessment(LCA)/Life Cycle Costing(LCC) in Building Information modelling(BIM) and Guided discovery-based sustainability learning for engineering students, and he is looking forward to continuing his research with SAPIENs on Quantitative Sustainability Assessments Indicators as Sustainable Public Procurement Criteria for the Building Sector. In his free time, Haitham enjoys taking hikes in nature, going to the gym, and cooking.
In this video, ESR 6 Haitham AbuGhaida tells us what his research project is about and how it contributes to society as a whole.
