Sapiens training Programme
SAPIENS will train the first generation of SPP experts sharing a common understanding of the challenges raised by the SDGs and having acquired the knowledge of the instruments needed to answer those challenges at policy, regulatory and operational levels.
The training will be based on the principles for Innovative Doctoral Training
Through five training objectives (TOs) and four core skill areas (CSAs), ESRs will acquire task-specific research skills and transferable research skills from both academic and non-academic sectors
Training scientifically outstanding researchers and SPP specialists with international, interdisciplinary, and intersectoral experience
Through co-supervision, secondments, the Advanced Training Courses (ATCs), and the Summer School, all ESRs will acquire a basic appreciation of the disciplines involved in SPP.
Training Objective 1
Educate the next generation of SPP research specialists.
Training Objective 2
Form next generation of high level SPP policy makers, trainers, and operators
Training Objective 3
Provide each ESR with transferable skills that will be valuable to them throughout their subsequent careers.
Training Objective 4
Enhance the achievements of ESRs by providing an optimum learning environment through the exposure of ESRs to an international interdisciplinary and intersectoral training.
Training Objective 5
Require each ESR to formulate a Personal Career Development Plan (PCDP) including detailed planning of the research project and a coherent skills training plan drawing from the beneficiaries’ training courses and the network-specific ATCs.
CSA 1
Research skills (meets TO1, TO2) covering the theory and application of research techniques relevant to meet the ROs and the delivery of the ESRs research projects:
- empirical techniques (defining appropriate research questions, formulating hypotheses, designing efficient experiments to test hypotheses, quantitative data analysis and statistics
- information retrieval and bibliographic skills
- analysing and managing research data; iv) interdisciplinary research
CSA 2
Transferable skills (meets TO3, TO5) covering:
- scientific communication (presentation skills, public
speaking, writing reports and publications to a public of non-experts, cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral communication) - public engagement and dissemination (communicating research outcomes to the wider public, including through ICT)
- managing scientific research (applying for grants, project management, time-management, how to write an effective research proposal)
- digital skills
- team working, leadership (mentoring, cooperation with supervisors, colleagues and peers, teaching) and networking skills
CSA 3
Creating responsible research and innovation skills (meets TO1, TO2) by developing expertise in dealing with RRI principles and applying them to concrete research problems in:
- ethics in research
- gender
- Open Science (Open Access and Open Data publishing)
- science education
CSA 4
Career Development (meets TO5) through the ESRs nurturing skills on effectively presenting their profile, job interview techniques and writing a successful CV). All ESRs will complete a self-assessed Initial Training Needs Analysis at the start of their training, following the ETNA model. This will address identified training needs and how they will be acquired from the portfolio of generic and transferable skills training courses provided by the Beneficiaries and POs or external organisations.
